SUPPLY CRATE

Hero Prop Recreation - Apex Legends

Apex Legends is currently my favourite and most played game! I decided to recreate one of the loot crates to practice my prop and hard surface modelling skills. Of all the options I considered working on (materials container, care package, replicator) this one appealed to me as its (in my opinion) the most important thing players identify and run to when playing Apex! This prop is also part of my overall Autumn Estates environment piece that you can view by clicking the button below.

For my reference, I used lots of in game screenshots, and images from Paul Tran's (original artist that created the Apex Loot Bin) post on ArtStation.

Process

I started with a cylinder primitive and did many extrudes to get the overall shape. I continued on to only model half of the crate so that I could duplicate and mirror the mesh over when I was finished. The metal loops on the top of the crate, the recessed areas at the front, were made using extrudes, and the latches were pieced together with a few cylinders and bend deformers. I made sure to delete any hidden faces inside the mesh that wouldn't be seen, in order to optimize my geometry.

I then unwrapped the UVs by hand and brang the mesh into Substance Painter for a bake and custom texture pass. I applied lots of metal edge wear and used dust generators to get the worn look in both the colour, roughness, and metalness maps.
